A jacket comes back on a Tuesday. How that goes decides whether they shop with you again. Switch the register into return mode and it works exactly the same way, only backwards. Look up the original sale and return against it, so you refund what they actually paid rather than today's price, and so a receipt can only be used once. The item goes back into stock in the store that took it, a return reason is recorded against it, and the refund can go back to the card, to cash, or onto a gift card as store credit.
An exchange is the same ticket: the return on one line, the replacement on the next, and only the difference changes hands. And because the reasons are recorded, you can see what's coming back and why — which is usually a supplier conversation waiting to happen.
Refunds, exchanges and store credit, without guessing what they paid.
